A Tale From A Fish by ~Slim-Beatnik:iconSlim-Beatnik:

Come sit next to me
and I'll tell you a tale.
The tale of a wish.

One day, while flying by,
a bird noticed a fish,
who was trying to fly.

He landed on the calm sea,
that didn't lap, push or pull,
And up to the young fish,
swam the old gull.

"Get your head out of there,
the air's for us birds.
Stop fluttering there,
and come down," came the words.
"You're not supposed to dream.
You're not supposed to wish.
And you must not fly,
because you're just a fish."

"You cannot do this,
You cannot do that.
Oh, just leave me alone!
Go get caught by a cat!"

"But why try so hard
to do something you can't?
You won't get away,
surely you shan't."

"Go away you...
Oh, something mean!
You're not helping me,
you're only hurting my dream."

"But I do want to help,
and I don't wish you harm. -"

"stop wasting your breath,
before you buy the farm."

"There's no helping you."
With that the bird flew away.

But the fish kept on trying,
all hours of the day.

And on one tiring night,
When the stars and moon shone,
the fish jumped quite high,
and had thought he had flown.

And he had, and he was,
without a doubt!
So he did flips and did rolls,
and flew all about.

Then by flew the bird,
who started to laugh,
"Why, you're doing it kid!
You've done it, at last."

So on flew the fish,
from sea to sea,
But there's another twist to the story.
You see, that fish was me.

And I don't regret those long nights
And I don't regret my toils.

In fact, I don't regret a thing,
because I followed my dream.

And I think you should too.
You should never give up.
'Cause if you try hard,
it will come soon enough.

But now I'm an old fish and I'm going home
to the fish that I love,
because they're the only thing better than flying above.

Author's Comments

A one hour poem, much like a test,
but damn I can't stop rhyming, though I keep trying my best.

A good "doctor" once wrote childrens' books when I was a child. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish is one of my favourites. I'm sure you have your own.

Anyway, I didn't even know it was going to turn out like this, or that I would go on such a rhyming rampage, but here it is.

This was written really well... It's a fantastic poem. I think if anyone can write a classic children's poem/story... it's a sign of great skill.

I loved Horton Hears a Who...

and Yurtle the Turtle.

This would make such a lovely children's book...and I did actually think of Dr Seuss while I was reading it.

Also, would you mind awfully if this joined my collection of things to show my little cousin when she starts learning to read? Because she loves listening to stories already :)

ha. That's some thick accent you just threw my way.
But I'm glad you like it, and I'll thank you today.

I've actually never heard of Yurtle.

Mr. Horton actually read Horton Hears A Who just to break the ice in 7th grade. Which seemed childish even at the time, but it's Dr. Seuss, you can't go wrong.

I'm really glad you like it!

That's probably the coolest request I've ever gotten and I'm not about to turn it down. Go for it, please, that's awesome!

It'd be cool to actually make a book out of this.

Before I even read the description, I thought of Dr. Seuss, and specifically, "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish."

It reminded me of a poem children would read, but at the same time it had a very "grown up" or "mature" feel to it. In a sense.

This was quite lovely. I loved it. I always love reading what you write. It gives me something to think about during the day.

I wish I had something better to say... but regardless of how I word it, this was amazing.

Good job, m'dear.
